"Earth Waits, With a Smile"

When I sit before her, I feel delirious and happy.
She holds my feet and her tears give my hardened skin
Complete relief.
She is a river -
Pure and perfect embrace -
That washes away my continual illusions.
Leaves on the water;
Slippery roots underneath.
I fall, hot and unfamiliar
Often uncertain - touched by her
Again, and again refreshed.
She waits with a smile.

The ever-seeking heart abandons its love-objects
In urgent dance: demand, eat, abandon
Demand, eat, abandon.
Homesick for itself, it mislabels the origin
Of the violence it bears forth.

The open heart rests: legs against the earth,
Hair in dirt, knees in dandelions, moonlight serenity
And simply says, Yes -
Kites in the wind, wild night, ocean birds, friends.

Sea grapes, surfboards, baby turtles, heartbeat;
Blades of grass to soften the steps of a person's feet
And yet - on every corner -
We break under our own weight.
Still, Earth waits, with a smile.
